Course Description

Economic crime has been around as long as we've had trade. While the tools and focus may have changed, the underlying concepts remain the same, and as criminals and their crimes continue to evolve, so must our responses to it. With the pandemic causing an accelerated shift to digital models of business, and the creation and implementation of government relief and public procurement programs, we are increasingly susceptible to criminal activity. How well have the systems coped and what could governments and administrations do to improve their responses? In the wake of past events, like the global financial crisis, business reported an increased pressure to falsify accounts and financial statements in the period of economic pressure. Can we expect to see similar pressures in the wake of COVID-19? And if so, how should accountants and finance professionals prepare themselves and their clients for it? Please join ACCA’s Jason Piper, Policy Lead - Tax and Business Law, for what promises to be a timely and interesting discussion on Economic Crime in a Digital Age!
